I have used this program called TrueCrypt for about a year, and forgot about it until I passed around an external hard drive with some movies on it to a co-worker. I wasn’t sure what was actually on the hard drive since all 3 of them looked exactly alike. I just knew there was movies…..
Anyway, paranoid set in thinking there might have been pictures of a girlfriend, tax information, bank stuff, and who knows what else I have on these hard drives I forgot about.
This program called True Crypt is a open sourced program (free) good for the MAC and PC. Since I recently got a MAC, I needed a MAC version. There’s a version of this program you can run on portable devices (External hard drives, memory sticks, etc…) called Travelers Mode. Lets you run this program on any computer that doesn’t have this installed. Sweet.. I highly recommend this to anybody with portables.
TrueCrypt is an open-source encryption software that enables you to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a virtual disk, that can be accessed via a drive letter. Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted with the correct password or key. TrueCrypt supports a variety of encryption algorithms, including AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. Other features include support for FAT32 or NTFS formatting, hidden volumes, hotkeys for mounting/dismounting and more.
